Snow Game

I’ve shot sports in torrential rain, freezing wind, and plenty of other extreme weather but I’d never shot a sports event in the snow until a couple weeks ago.

It snowed for the entire game between the Green Bay Packers and the Houston Texans, essentially transforming Lambeau Field into a soggy snow globe. It’s definitely a different challenge shooting in the snow, but preferable to the extreme cold and makes for some great scenes.

Frames from state volleyball

I’ve been meaning to make this post for a month now, I’m going to try and get better at updating this blog more frequently, so here goes.

My first major assignment after starting my new job at the Green Bay Press-Gazette this fall was the Wisconsin state girls volleyball tournament. I’ve always found volleyball a challenging (but also very rewarding) sport to shoot both because of its speed and repetition.

I always try to switch angles or lenses whenever possible to keep my eye fresh and not get lulled into repetitive shooting of the same thing all day. So I thought I’d share some less traditional looking shots away from the typical tournament action.

Thanks for looking!

Supermoon in Green Bay

I’ve always been drawn to shooting lunar events, eclipses, supermoons etc, and this frequently involves late nights and being frustrated by clouds/weather. I recall shooting a lunar eclipse at 2 a.m. in mid-winter… So when I saw that this week’s supermoon, the largest since 1948, would be rising around 5 p.m. on a mild November day there was no question I’d be out shooting it.

On Sunday I started out downtown by the river and Titletown Brewing with its Donald Driver statue, moved to the Brown County Courthouse as the moon rose higher, and readjusted my position for an incoming flight to the airport.

gpg-supermoon_111316_abw154

Monday evening I went North of town on the west shore of the bay for the moon rise over the water. Unfortunately clouds obstructed the horizon at moon rise, but about 20 minutes later the moon was visible and while the dramatic shot of the moon peeking over the horizon had passed, the reflection in the bay made from a pretty dramatic photo itself.

Iowa’s Four Seasons in photos

I’ve always liked photographing the elements and people dealing with them. And while looking back through the nearly 5,000 photos that I filed in 2015 quite of few of the images that stood out were weather related.

As any Midwesterner will tell you, there are four distinct seasons in the region. During the college football season itself I experience bone-chilling cold in Lincoln, NE during Iowa vs Nebraska in November and 130-degree turf for the Hawkeyes’ season opener in Iowa City against Illinois State. This year I shot lightning storms, snow storms, rain storms, wind storms…and, well you get the idea.

So here’s the Iowa weather in 2015 through my viewfinder. Hope you enjoy!
