High School Athlete of the Year Portraits

I spent a large chunk of time in June traveling around Eastern Iowa to take portraits of the finalists and winners of The Gazette’s annual high school athlete of the year award. This is my 2nd straight year shooting the portraits for this feature. Last year the photographic theme was a heavily lit indoor academic theme in high schools. This year I flipped the concept and shot all the portraits outside with a straight forward one lit setup. Part of this was because most of the student athletes in this year’s group of finalists were somewhat uniquely from small town schools, and showing them in their small town and rural communities seemed ideal.
